Strip the Streets

Students from all over Waterloo Region will come to Waterloo Public Square to spend the night outside in the cold to raise awareness for youth homelessness.

On February 26th around 8:00PM, an estimated 50 students will arrive at the square with tents and the clothes on their back to learn from members of our homeless community and experience for themselves a little piece of what they must endure every day of their lives.

The students will also provide literature and education to interested members of the public and raise cash and goods donations to support local homeless initiatives such as ROOF and SHOW.

Friends and supporters are invited to join the students on Saturday morning from 11am - 12pm for a rally to finish off their journey. Complete with Inspirational Speakers and great music, this rally will get the word out that our community Youth should not have to go homeless. Let's rally together for change!

Imagyn Film Festival

The Imagyn Film Festival offers a supportive, safe and inclusive forum for Canadian youth to share their views and stories through short film. Students are encouraged to express their experiences of violence and of peace through a constructive use of technology and art.

After a highly successful launch in 2009, the Imagyn Film Festival announced this year’s theme as “Anti Violence: Engagement and Resistance.” From March 5-7, the festival will present student-made films and videos, panel discussions featuring regional students, and workshops facilitated by community leaders, all with the goal of providing an inviting opportunity for Canadian students to express their perspectives on various forms of violence and various forms of peace.

Multiple inquiries have revealed how ideas and practices of gender and sexual-orientation are central to any critical discussion of youth violence. For this reason, the IFF Festival highlights the problem of gender-based violence. Despite mounting reports citing the unravelling of youth safety, security and health in Canada, the experiences and voices of young people continue to be ignored, dismissed, or silenced. The community inaction is disheartening, considering that in addition to the increasing incidence that is accounted for, violence is, in fact, underreported: fear, shame and guilt prevent as many as 90% of students from reporting violence.

The Imagyn Film Festival recognizes and responds to this alarming trend by prioritizing student voices and concerns. In addition to breaking silence, the IFF Festival also break new ground make room for community hope, positivity and creativity, through celebrating the knowledge, incredible skills and courage showcased by our Canadian youth.

Admission to all events is free and open to the public. High school students are especially encouraged to attend.

CIGI Afghanistan Series Part 1- From the Front Line: Canadian Forces in Afghanistan

Join Colonel J.C.R. Lacroix, CD (Deputy Commander of Canadian and NATO Forces in Kandahar Province from February to November 2009) and Tara Denham (Chief of Staff for the Representative of Canada in Kandahar) for a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the counter-insurgency struggle taking place in this conflict-stricken region.

You will also learn how Canadian Forces are working to assist the Afghans in sustaining a more secure environment in order to facilitate development, reconstruction and law and order. The Colonel will speak on combat operations, the challenges of command during a demanding and complex mission, as well as the advances being made by Canadian soldiers and civilians in spite of the difficult conditions in the heart of Kandahar Province. You will not want to miss this informative discussion about the Afghanistan mission.

The City of Waterloo’s 55+ programs and services division is launching a new series, called Speaking to Seniors. It will run on the third Monday of each month, featuring different speakers that will discuss topics of interest to people who are 55 years old and above.

The series kicks off on Jan. 18, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre, at 510 Dutton Dr.

This month’s speaker is personal trainer Gloria Vaughan. She will talk about how to optimize your health and happiness in order to live a fulfilling life. Admission is $2 per person.

Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how–through the use of language, framing and context–the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied territories appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel’s PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics.

Executive Director John Siebert and Senior Program Associate Kenneth Epps of Project Ploughshares will discuss the recently released report by Project Ploughshares and World Vision Canada entitled: “Addressing Armed Violence in East Africa: A Report on World Vision Peacebuilding, Development and Humanitarian Assistance Programmes.”

The report is based on field research in selected areas of Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan in Sep 2008 documenting the impact of World Vision peacebuilding and development programming. This report was officially launched on 12 November 2009 at the International Peace Institute in New York in connection with the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development, and the 16 November 2009 tabling at the UN General Assembly of the UN Secretary-General’s 5 August 2009 report: "Promoting Development through the Reduction and Prevention of Armed Violence."

Public Lecture with Dr. Alistair Miller, Researcher Emeritus, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

Atmospheric greenhouse gas build-up threatens the future of civilization. The damaging effects of a growing build-up of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the geosphere are complex but unarguably bad. The twin disruptions of climate disruption and ocean acidification must be curbed. So far, efforts to address the problem have been woefully short on effective action though long on volubility and distractions.

Meanwhile, time to deal with the problem is slipping away. There is no one silver bullet to fix the problem. Unfortunately, most of the bullets fired to date have either, missed the mark, failed to penetrate the target, caused collateral damage or shot the messengers. While curtailing energy waste is desirable, the essential fix is massive deployment of energy sources that are minimally damaging. These sources should also be as cost-effective as possible and have low possibilities for partial or total failure.

Transportation is going to be increasingly electrified and a broad trend toward greater dependency on electricity now seems certain. But electricity is only a power currency. How will it be produced? Many forms of renewable energy and nuclear power qualify on technical effectiveness. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) may possibly qualify in future though its cost and effectiveness will not be established for another decade.

This talk looks at projections of global demand for energy and ways that this energy could be provided with acceptable side-effects and lowest possible cost.

Technical writers, content managers, and publications staff from many of the Tech Triangle’s leading companies will learn how they can reuse their content to save time and money, at an education evening at the University of Waterloo next week.

A presentation of the Southwestern Ontario Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication, the event features three experts in content reuse, software, and training, who will deliver an overview of the great potential for content reuse in virtually any business setting. Attendees will learn the benefits of writing for reuse and the process of planning and creating reusable content. There will also be a demonstration on content reuse with SmartDocs, an MS Word add-in that integrates the power of content reuse in the Word environment.

Open to the public, the event concludes with a hands-on Smart Docs training session.

The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is coming to the City of Waterloo this winter, and you won’t want to miss out on the festivities that are being planned.

Mark the date in your calendar – Sunday, Dec. 27. Festivities will be held in the Waterloo Public Square from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. that day. There will be free hot chocolate, live entertainment and skating on the new rink.

The torch will make a brief stop in the square too!

Pandora is no longer about what is hidden inside of the box, never to be revealed, but what is metaphorically reflected on the outside. Inside Pandora's Box viewers will encounter a phantasmagoria of myths, folk tales, stereotypes and ambiguity.

International artists challenge disempowering myths and fairy tales to make them a more accurate mirror of female experience in new socio-historical contexts. They share personal fictions, political statements and psychological manifestations. We are invited to reflect on larger human issues such as birth, death, parenthood, relationships, rites of passage and multiple identities through an engagement with other worldly creatures and everyday environments.

Art Escape March Break Program

Create a collaborative printmaking mural. Art Escape students work as a team to brainstorm, plan and execute a large-scale mural using collagraph printmaking techniques. Students will be engaged in preliminary sketching exercises and will apply collage techniques to the production of printing plates, which will then be used in the printing process. In addition to contributing to the group mural, students will leave the studio with their own printing plates and finished prints.

Tree of Angels Campaign Kick-Off, Conestoga Mall

The annual Tree of Angels 2009 Campaign - spearheaded by the Salvation Army and community partners - gets underway on Friday November 27th, with a mid-day kick-off ceremony at Conestoga Mall, in front of Zellers.

Join us if you can at 12:00 noon, for music by the Salvation Army band, plus cookies, hot chocolate and cider donated by Conestoga Mall. City of Waterloo and other local dignitaries will offer opening remarks, MC'd by Tree of Angels Honourary Campaign Chair, Angie Hill from KOOL FM.

Last year, about 2,000 local families and over 4,000 children were assisted by the Tree of Angels campaign. Dozens of City of Waterloo volunteers help to make the campaign possible each year, by accepting gifts at the Tree of Angels during weekday shifts. Many local service club members act as weekend and evening volunteers throughout the campaign, which runs from November 27 - December 19 this year.

Tree of Angels campaign volunteers are always pleased to accept toys, gifts and cash donations for distribution to families in need in our community. If you can't join us at the kick-off this Friday, please feel welcome to drop by with a toy or donation at anytime during mall opening hours, until December 19th.

Courses are offered in Interactive Storytelling, Creative Drama, Musical Theatre Vocal Ensemble, Audition Prep Course, TV/Commercial Course, Improv, Acting and Teen for New Actors Courses.

Winter term runs 10 weeks between December 1 and the week before March Break.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Ride for Diabetes Research has a proven track record for being the most exciting and unique fundraising event in the country. It has often been said that everyone loves a parade and those in attendance at our annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade are no exception. Thousands of people line the parade route each year to see the floats, bands and special entries that are part of this annual event.

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest features one of the most spectacular Thanksgiving Day Parades in Canada. Join over 150,000 Fest-goers as they line King Street on Thanksgiving morning, eagerly awating the colourful floats, clowns and award winning marching bands from Canada and the United States. Parade begins in Uptown Waterloo at 8:30am.

The Tri-City Roller Girls are bringing the whole three-ring circus back to New Hamburg this fall with the Flat Track Freak Show!

The Region’s favorite roller girls are thrilled to be back in their beloved headquarters at the New Hamburg Arena on Sept. 26 for a fierce face off against their derby sisters to the west, London’s Forest City Derby Girls. This will be their first ever match up with the London girls, who share close ties with TCRG and have trained with the local girls on many occasions.

The doors for the Flat Track Freakshow open at 6 p. m. and derby starts at 7 p. m.

KW|AG is also pleased to present UK-based Canadian artist Janice Kerbel as a complement to CAFKA’s (Contemporary Art Forum | Kitchener & Area) 2009 theme of Veracity, and as part of the Gallery’s Singularly Significant series. The Singularly Significant series features concise projects by artists marking significant developments in contemporary art practice. Kerbel’s Remarkable, a series of large prints reminiscent of fairground posters, announce the spectacular feats of improbable beings. Contrasting in its scale and intimacy is another work titled Underwood. This series of four fictional love letters, one for each season, is rendered in a typeface designed to mimic a faulty typewriter. Using text and the subtleties of reproduction, Kerbel leaves the viewer to imagine a visual equivalent of hyperbole and promise.

Dead Sea Scrolls events

Coinciding with the Royal Ontario Museum's exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Community Christian Reformed Church -- located at 1275 Bleams Road in Kitchener -- is hosting two events.

The first, beginning at 7PM on Friday, October 2nd, features a free public presentation by Dan Machiela of McMaster University and Albert Wolters of Redeemer University College. They will discuss both what the Scrolls mean for understanding how the Bible came to be and how the Scrolls illuminate many of the religious ideas in the region during the formative years of Christianity. Free child care will be provided.

The second event, beginning at 8:30 AM on Saturday, October 3rd, is a day trip to the Royal Ontario Museum to see the Scrolls. Group discount prices for entry to the Museum together with a $12 per person round-trip transportation cost make this a truly affordable outing for the entire family.

This memorial event offers individuals and families in the Midwestern Region a touching and visible way to remember their loved ones who have died. Participants are invited to dedicate a personalized stained glass star in memory of their loved one. These stained glass stars are made by the survivors of the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo Wellington. The community is also invited to attend our dedication service where they can place their star on the tree during the ceremony. All stars will be available to take home after the ceremony.

This is a non-religious service with a special musical interlude that creates a quiet & uplifting time to share in the fellowship of friends & family. ABOUT THE LECTURE: Recent research has pointed to cost-effective ways to reduce child malnutrition in developing countries. Given the world recession, protecting children’s nutrition is an ever-more urgent priority. What would it cost to implement the recommendations? Can we afford to do this (can we afford NOT to do this)?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Susan Horton is the Associate Provost, Graduate Studies, and CIGI Chair in Global Health Economics, University of Waterloo. She received her BA from Cambridge, and her Masters and PhD from Harvard, and specializes in health, nutrition and labour market issues in developing countries. She has worked in over 20 developing countries, and has consulted for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, several UN agencies, International Development Research Centre, etc. She served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, Chair of the Department of Social Science and Interim Dean at University of Toronto at Scarborough, and as Vice-President Academic at Laurier.

World Religions Conference Summary: The World Religions Conference (WRC) is an annual multi-faith event which brings together learned scholars from the world’s major religions, providing them an opportunity to speak on a common topic from the perspective of their respective religious traditions.

Theme for 2009: Is God Relevant in Today’s World? How World Religions explain the relevance of God in a today’s world of science, society of economic uncertainty and cultural multiplicity. With the advancement of Science and Technology, belief in Faith and God is often considered a conflict with the belief in Science. World Religions will explore if belief in God can coexist with belief in science and belief in knowledge.

Public Lecture with Jan Carr. Society’s prosperity rests on our effective use of energy. Just as the industrial revolution with its steam engine transformed life and the economy two centuries ago, so too did the introduction of electric utility services a hundred years ago.

As an “energy currency” electricity is unique in its ability to connect diverse sources of energy to innumerable uses big and small. In our search for ways to reduce society’s dependence on fossil fuels, electricity’s future role will be shaped not only by its immense flexibility but also by limitations imposed by the laws of physics and the realities of economics.

Jan Carr will explore the role that electricity has played in the economic development of Ontario and Canada and he will highlight the current challenges as they relate to the environmental footprint of energy use.

Please join Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran on Sept. 12, 2009, beginning at 2 p.m., as she welcomes the 31 Combat Engineer Regiment (the Elgins) to Waterloo.

The parade will begin at the Waterloo Public Square at 2 p.m. when Mayor Halloran will grant the regiment the freedom of the city. This honour – one of the highest honours a municipality can bestow upon a military unit – is granted as a way for a community to mark its gratitude to a regiment for the service of its members. From the square, the parade will march to the Waterloo Veterans’ Green on University Avenue for a final ceremony and laying of a memorial wreath.

What: The RAW Talent Concert & Art Show is a three-hour celebration of the arts. The event is FREE!! The musical acts are semi-professional (many of the songs performed are original); also, there will be a half-hour open mic segment at the end of the concert. Red Cross Photo Exhibition Comes to Kitchener/Waterloo

In 2008, the Canadian Red Cross provided Indonesian children, aged eight to 16, with disposable cameras and an invitation to photograph what represented their world today.

The result is Pictures Talk, a story of hope and renewal four years after the tsunami. Pictures Talk, featuring 25 photos taken by the young tsunami survivors, will be on display at the Waterloo Button Factory and Kitchener’s Fairview Park from Aug.11 - 21.

Pumped! for Africa: An Engineers Without Borders Pumpathon

To properly irrigate a field the size of the Public Square, a farmer in Northern Ghana would have to be on a treadle pump for 2-3 hours per day. Investing in a technology such as a treadle pump allows farmers to continue agricultural paractices throughout the dry season, increasing both yields and financial security. The Agriculture as a Business program, created by the Ghanaian Ministry of Food and Agriculture along with Engineers Without Borders Canada, helps small scale farmers develop business skills and takes steps such as this in order to transition their operation from subsistence farming to a viable agricultural enterprise. Strong agricultural businesses result in increased access to water, sanitation, health care, education for Ghanaian farmers and their families.

EWB-Grand River is supporting the Agriculture as a Business Program by funding a member of Engineers Without Borders Canada to work as a volunteer on the project, providing collaborative project management assistance to the program and farmers. In their efforts to raise awareness of the struggle of African farmers and support this project, Engineers Without Borders is hosting “Pumped for Africa” in the Public Square on August 25, 2009. Their target goal is to spend 5-6 hours pumping water via treadle pump. Volunteers on the treadle pump will collect pledges from sponsors and all proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Agriculture as a Business Program in Ghana.

Come out and support this exciting event! You may sponsor a pumper or volunteer to jump on the pump yourself and encourage your friends, family or co-workers to sponsor you! Get pumped with the opportunity that is possible when everyone works together to unleash the entrepreneurial potential of Ghanaian farmers!

As members of the Canadian Red Cross, we aim to better educate the public about essential emergency procedures in the event of a disaster.

We are offering a free emergency preparedness workshop to the public on August 10th from 7-8:30pm at the Kitchener-Waterloo branch. The workshop will prepare individuals, families and communities to be self-sufficient at least 72 hours following a disaster.

3 Week Healing Program with Swami Shree Yogi Satyam - Kriyayoga Meditation

Yog Fellowship is a non-profit organization dedicated toward the science of Kriyayoga, a non-sectarian, spiritual practice. We will be hosting the honoured guest, Swami Sri Yogi Satyam, from India, for a three week period beginning Friday, August 14, 2009 for the annual Summer Healing Program.

Kriyayoga Meditation is an ancient, yet ever-new, and time-tested practice which allows the practitioner to realize the Truth behind existence. In short periods of time, many have completely healed themselves of such physical ailments as liver and malignant breast cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, fibromyalgia, and more. Many have been recorded on the website.
There is a significant development of peace and understanding in practitioners, which permeates their personal and professional lives and increases their general wellbeing and contentment. Unlike other modes of meditation, Kriyayoga, if sincerely practised as per instructions, has been proven to raise the intelligence of practitioners. Regardless of age, physical, or mental ability, this Kriyayoga Master will be teaching this scientific technique and guiding all the practitioners who attend at no charge.
There will be four sessions daily between Friday, August 14, 2009 to Sunday, September 6, 2009. It is recommended that participants attend a minimum of 3 consecutive classes to grasp an understanding of the Kriyayoga philosophy. Wear comfortable clothing; bring a notebook, pen, and a blanket or pillow for sitting. Chairs will also be available for those who cannot sit comfortably on the floor. The Summer Healing Program is residential for those who wish to stay at the facility for the duration of the program.
