Cinematheque Waterloo Presents The Princess Bride

Cinematheque Waterloo’s summer programming concludes with a screening of Rob Reiner’s 1987 crowd-pleaser, The Princess Bride (USA, 98 min.).

The presentation is in keeping with the local film group’s goal of showing motion pictures as they were intended to be seen: as quality, 35mm prints projected on the big screen.

The film screens at the Original Princess Cinema (Waterloo) on Sunday, August 15, 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 17, 7:00 p.m. Told with light-hearted style and tongue firmly in cheek, The Princess Bride begins with a grandfather (Peter Falk) reading the titular novel to his sick grandson (Fred Savage, who secured a Young Artist Award for his performance and who went on to star in the hit TV show, The Wonder Years). What follows is a swashbuckling tale of a kidnapped princess, an evil prince, pirates, giants, and, of course, true love.

Featuring a remarkable, star-studded cast, including Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Christopher Guest, and memorable cameos from Billy Crystal and Carol Kane, and bolstered by a whimsical, Oscar-nominated score by Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler, The Princess Bride is one of the most enduring family films of the 1980s and among Rob Reiner’s most hilarious productions. Based on the 1973 novel by William Goldman, and winner of the People’s Choice Award when it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Princess Bride is sure to be a hit with Waterloo audiences.

CINEMATHEQUE WATERLOO is a not-for-profit initiative that aims to promote film viewing and film culture in the Waterloo region. It seeks to restore the excitement and value of an "evening at the theatre" that existed prior to the advent of home viewing. All films presented by Cinematheque Waterloo are shown at the original Princess Cinema (6 Princess St. W., Waterloo). Most screenings are introduced by guest speakers. The activities of Cinematheque Waterloo are made possible through generous grants provided by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund and the Laurier Partners in Excellence Fund. Annual memberships cost $60 ($40 for students) and include admission to all Cinematheque Waterloo screenings (12-25 per year) as well as a membership to the Princess and Princess Twin theatres (a $10 value).

Celebrate upgrades to Mary Allen Park

An official opening ceremony is being planned to celebrate upgrades that are coming to Mary Allen Park. Members of the Mary Allen Neighbourhood Association have fundraised more than $15,000 this past year to enlarge their community basketball court, move a light standard to improve access and install sod and new trees.

This work will be done, in partnership with the City of Waterloo and various local sponsors, from Aug. 2-14, culminating in the opening ceremony. That will be held on Aug. 14, with the official ribbon cutting at 1 p.m.

The City of Waterloo will be participating in Ontario’s 2010 Community Conservation Challenge.

As part of the campaign, residents are being asked to take the Power Pledge and make a few simple conservation actions from now until challenge day in August. By taking the Power Pledge, Ontarians will save money and electricity, and help the environment.

KW Glee Auditions

Renaissance School of the Arts is now booking audition times for September 11 & 12, 2010 for the Fall choirs.

September 11th is currently full, and we are now booking the 12th. Please contact Steve Lehmann to arrange an audition time. We ask that you prepare a pop tune - something that you could envision on the TV show. Please have sheet music and/or a backing track with you (we have an iPod hookup).

REHEARSALS take place on Saturday mornings from 9:30am - 11:30am, or 11:30am - 1:30pm, depending on which choir you are placed in. Please arrange to keep the entire 9:30am - 1:30pm time slot free, as occasionally both choirs will be combined for the full rehearsal time. Periodically, there will be choreography rehearsals on Monday nights. These dates have not been set yet. Rehearsal dates for KW Glee II (Fall 2010): September 18, 25 October 2, 16, 23, 30 November 6, 13, 20, 27 Dress rehearsal December 4, 2010 Final concert December 5, 2010 Additional concert on New Years Eve! Please note: other performance opportunities may arise, and all dates may be subject to change.

Fee: $250 per term + costume

K-W Glee is comprised of two outstanding show choirs that perform live in the tri-cities area. One choir is made up of all-girls and the other is a mixed group. The concept was organized by musical director Steve Lehmann and voice director Amanda Kind, who were inspired by the hit television series, Glee. But this Kitchener-Waterloo group is distinctly different than the televised show because it performs without cuts, takes, splices, voice-overs or auto-tuning, and the cast members don’t earn Hollywood salaries. K-W Glee is built of young people aged 14-23 whose enthusiasm for song and performance might rival Rachel Berry’s, but who pull it off with considerably more swagger. The public got its first glimpse of K-W Glee on April 25, 2010 at Parkminster United Church, followed by an appearance at Centre in the Square on May 2, 2010 when they opened for Waterloo Region’s Got Talent and a brief open-air demo on May 29, 2010 at Waterloo Town Square. On May 30, 2010, after only 10 rehearsals, K-W Glee presented its first full-repertoire concert showcasing the group’s broad spectrum of talent. This performance sold out five weeks in advance - a demonstration of eager anticipation that surely shows K-W views their Glee as worthy of preservation in the hearts of all.

Auditions for the Spring session will be held in January 2011.

The ninth Annual Afro Festival, hosted yearly by the African Women's Alliance of Waterloo Region, is coming up on Saturday, July 24.

Afro Festival is a festival of exciting dance, energetic music, entertaining drama, dazzling art and delicious African cuisine celebrating the rich cultural heritage of all 53 countries that comprise the African continent. It has become a huge rallying point for Africans living in the region.

The festival will run between noon and 9:30 pm at Waterloo Park, Westmount Road entrance. There will be many activities for the whole family, so all are welcome to come out and enjoy the day!

It's a better impulse to want to talk about it. Join student and community activists to learn about the G20 and current social and environmental justice campaigns in Kitchener/Waterloo and Toronto, and to get involved. Waterloo Potters’ Workshop (WPW) is opening EARTHBORN 2010 at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery this summer, June 13th and closing August 22nd.

The exhibition features the best works by members of the WPW, and is juried by ceramic artist Joni Moriyama. This is the time to celebrate excellence in our local ceramics community with the best of the best this organization has to offer in the artistry and craft of pottery making.

The WPW is a not-for-profit co-operative organization whose aim is to encourage an interest, and knowledge of pottery making. They also present EMPTY BOWLS, an annual fundraising event for the local food bank.

Enjoy a scenic ride on July 18 to help support National Service Dogs in changing the life of children with Autism.

The ride will begin in Cambridge and include a stop at Rocky’s Harley Davidson/Buell store in London. The day will conclude with a complimentary dinner at the start point.

With your help National Service Dogs was able to raise almost $7000 toward our autism program in 2009. This year our goal is $10,000!

Official Opening Ceremony for the University Downs Park Playground

The official opening ceremony for the University Downs Park playground will be held on Saturday, June 5 at 3 p.m.

That’s when local dignitaries and members of the community will come together to unveil a new swing set – featuring a special swing for children with disabilities. The community has fundraised to help pay for the equipment there.

A “party in the park” begins at 9 a.m. and runs throughout the day. The University Downs Park is at 240 Auburn Dr., in Waterloo.

The 18th annual City of Waterloo Service Centre open house will be held on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will learn about some of the services the City provides, and can tour the Service Centre yards and greenhouse. Come ride in a dump truck and learn about some of the exciting initiatives that are underway in Waterloo.

There will be something for everyone, including a charity barbecue benefiting KidsAbility – Centre for Child Development.

The community is invited to join us as we harvest wetland plants from Laurelwood Storm Water Management Pond (SWM pond) and transplant them to the inlet and perimeter of Winchester SWM pond.

This planting will require you to put on the provided waders or wear your own rubber boots to plant the vegetation along the waters edge. This activity is geared to ages 14 years of age or older, accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Adult waders, rubber gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided.

Meet at Winchester Park located on Fischer-Hallman Rd, just north of the Beechwood Zehrs Plaza, on the corner of Erb St. W and Fischer-Hallman Road.

Efforts will focus on removing litter from a section of Laurel Creek from Weber Street to Erb Street along Blackwillow Link Trail. We will begin where the stream crosses Weber Street and walk upstream, removing debris from the banks and Laurel Creek.

Meet at the Weber Street bridge and the creek crossing along Blackwillow Link Trail.

Waders and arm length rubber gloves will be provided for those working in the stream. Those walking the banks should wear appropriate sturdy footwear. Bring your own waders if you have them. This activity is geared to ages 14 and up; minors under eighteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Laurel Creek Citizens - Community Planting Event

Celebrate Community Parks Week by planting a tree!

Join the Laurel Creek Citizens Working Group as they plant 120-150 native trees and shrubs in the Bechtel Park Leash Free Dog Park. These new plantings will provide shade to trail users and help stabilize the soil as it slopes to a tributary of Laurel Creek.

Wear sturdy closed-toed footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather. Gloves and tools are provided by the City of Waterloo. This activity is appropriate for all ages, as small plant material and minimal tools are used, however, parents/guardians are responsible for supervising minors (18 years and under) during the activity.

When entering Bechtel Park off of Bridge Street (at University Ave E), turn left and head towards the lower gravel parking lot behind the tennis courts. Meet you at the Leash Free Park!

The nature of tactical activism and the goals of activist collectives have shifted.
Today, activist collectives are just as likely to propose utopian solutions as they are to get arrested.

spurse is an open-ended group of individuals and organizations that work towards the development of new forms of engagement, practices and knowledge. spurse’s projects often take the form of a temporary research institute/laboratory or intervention, and have included temporary restaurants, microbiological laboratories for museums, musical performances, and publishing in a variety of media.

Many of spurse's projects experiment with the capabilities of existing systems, whether they be urban spaces, garbage, or our ability to listen. spurse has facilitated projects, exhibitions, performances, lectures, seminars and workshops that ask participants to rethink current concepts of knowledge and being.

Recent projects include Micromobilia: Machines for the Intensive Research of Interior Bio-Geographies which is part of “Experi- mental Geography,” a traveling exhibition curated by Nato Thompson and circulated by Independent Curators International, and Deep Time Rapid Time at Grand Arts (Kansas, Missouri), and work in Greenland reconsidering Rockwell Kent and the North Atlantic with the North Atlantic Marine Organization.

Members of spurse will be in Waterloo Region from May 4 to 9, 2010 to explore the Region of Waterloo, and to present a lecture on Thursday May 6, 2010 at 7pm at the Kitchener Public Library to discuss their philosophy and working methods, as well as their past projects, current research, and future projects.

The lecture will be followed, on Saturday May 8, by a roundtable session with community stakeholders, intended to facilitate collaboration and inform their upcoming project for CAFKA. CAFKA [ Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener + Area ] is about making art happen in the public spaces of Waterloo Region.

CAFKA's Big Ideas In Art & Culture Lecture series continues its mandate by inviting exciting artists to engage with the local community; to provoke thought and reflection. The event is free, and all are welcome.

Emergency Preparedness Week Kickoff

To kick-off Emergency Preparedness Week, Waterloo Fire Rescue will be at Conestoga Mall this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be a display booth educating shoppers and residents about the week, which runs from May 2-8.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a time when people are encouraged to think about being prepared for an emergency before one strikes.

The week's theme this year is Take the Challenge and get prepared for an emergency by putting together a survival kit, complete with a three-day supply of food and water, an emergency radio, a flashlight, a first-aid kit and a whistle.

Sustainability Plan for the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery

Through a grant from the City of Waterloo, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery (CCGG) has hired Carrie Brooks-Joiner & Associates to assist in the development of a Sustainability Plan for the Gallery that will be presented to the City of Waterloo at its June 21, 2010 Council meeting.  

A broad consultation phase is now underway, gathering input from a wide range of stakeholders including, among others, the Board, Gallery staff, Gallery members, donors and funders, representatives of the City of Waterloo, and the community at large.    

A public meeting to gather community perspectives will be held on Wednesday, April 28 in Room 207 and Room 208 at the Manulife Financial Sportsplex, RIM Park, 2001 University Avenue, Waterloo, ON. Registration at 6:15 and the meeting from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm.

Everyone is welcome.

John Kissick: A Nervous Decade

Kissick's work has enjoyed acclaim over the past decade for its ongoing attempts to position itself in a dialogue with the historical conventions of abstraction. This exhibition traces the trajectory of the artist's work from its origins in the reconfigurations of abstract expressionism, through to its current immersion in hybrid painting and popular culture. This survey of paintings from the last decade gleaned from public and private collections provides a glimpse into Kissick's practice during this very active period.

A comprehensive catalogue featuring essays by Roald Nasgaard, Liz Wylie and Jason Lahr will be published in concert with the exhibition.

Get involved in a PARTNERS IN PARKS stewardship activity in your neighbourhood greenspace in Waterloo! Join the community as we mulch woodland trails within Bomberger woodlot (Auburn Park) to celebrate Earth Day!

Spreading a thick layer of wood chips helps to encourage trail users to stay on the path, preventing soil compaction and erosion throughout the woodland.

WHAT TO BRING: The City of Waterloo, Partners in Parks program, provides participants with cloth gloves, tools and refreshments. Additional wheelbarrows are welcome. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and closed-toed footwear.

WHO: This activity is geared to ages 14 years and up. Minors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.

Bring the family to experience the awesome thrills of the Waterloo Aviation Expo & Air Show -- a spectacular two-day event that combines ground and flying displays that will entertain, educate and inspire anyone who enjoys the thrill and power of flight.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will headline this year's aerial display with their incredible 9-plane aerobatic formations. Mix in military power featuring esteemed warbirds, incredible daredevil civilian aerobatics, and top it off with a plane landing on a speeding motorhome - and you have one of this summer's best reasons to head to the Waterloo International Airport!

Other highlights include the B-17 "Memphis Belle" Flying Fortress -- the formidable WWII bomber; a Navy Corsair -- representing the Canadian Navy's 100th anniversary in 2010; a Russian MiG, and the much-admired historic Harvards and Tiger Moths.

Come out early because the tarmac will be covered with static aircraft -- additional aircraft that don't fly in the show, but allow people to see them up close, photograph them, talk to the pilots and crew, and sometimes climb aboard. Highlighting the static display will be the Silver Dart -- a replica of the first airplane flown in Canada 101 years ago by J.A. McCurdy. This replica aircraft travelled across the country last year commemorating the 100th anniversary of powered flight. This all in addition to aviation displays and exhibits allowing the public to discover and explore military and civilian aviation up close.

Nanotechnology Engineering Fourth Year Design Symposium

The First Waterloo Nanotechnology Engineering Symposium WATERLOO, Ont.

Students from the University of Waterloo's nanotechnology engineering program will hold the first Nanotechnology Engineering Symposium next week. The symposium will exhibit such inventive projects including a stealth coating for night vision goggles, more efficient solar cells, eyewear tinting controlled with the push of a button, self tinting windows, high efficiency insulation, miniaturized pesticide testing devices and an electronic nose to detect dangerous vapours.

The inaugural design symposium highlights the work done by the first students to enter the nanotechnology engineering program who are set to graduate in April 2010. This innovative multidisciplinary program, which started in the fall of 2005, teaches how to exploit the special physicochemical properties of materials fabricated on the nanometer scale (one nanometer is one hundred thousand times smaller than a strand of human hair). “We are excited to see the first product of Waterloo’s new Nanotechnology Engineering program in this class of graduating students, and the designs they have fostered” said Professor Hany Aziz, the fourth-year design project coordinator. “Certainly the novel, cutting-edge nature of the program, as well as the multidisciplinary nature of the work, is well reflected in the projects to be displayed.”

The event will be held at the William G. Davis Computer Research Centre on the University of Waterloo campus, from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to browse the interactive displays and meet with students anytime during the symposium. More than 65 students will present 16 interactive projects in seminar format to guests from industry and the academic community. Students will also display working design project prototypes at a poster presentation session running throughout the entire day.

World Partnership Walk 2010

The World Partnership Walk is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to increasing awareness and funds to fight global poverty.
For more than 25 years, Canadians have been participating in the Walk and have improved the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people in Asia and Africa by raising more than $50 Million.

On Saturday June 5, 2010 the Cambridge Arts Festival aims to entertain, free of charge.

The Festival will run rain or shine from 10am until 10pm in and around Cambridge City Hall.

Three stages, combined, will offer over 50 performances and workshops by local musicians, dancers, poets, and storytellers. Visual and culinary artists will be on hand to display and demonstrate their work.

In the 21st century, the forces of political, technological and economic globalization have resulted in the merging of people from many nationalities and cultures.

Sin-ying Ho’s One World/Many Peoples illustrates the course of such an encounter between colliding cultures and eras. The deconstruction and reconstruction of objects is a visual demonstration of the transformation that occurs when time and cultures collide.

Ho draws our attention to cross-cultural experience by combining apparently divergent elements, such as hand painted and digital images into single works of art. In this exhibition, Ho juxtaposes fragments of various Eastern and Western forms and imagery to comment on contemporary postcolonial theory, which critiques Imperial Europe by examining issues such as slavery, migration, race, gender, and place.

Foundling - Michèle Karch-Ackerman.
Michèle Karch-Ackerman’s latest interactive installation project, “Foundling” honours the lives of unwed mothers and the babies they were asked to give up.

Inspired by her grandmother’s experience as an unwed mother staying at the Misericordia Home in the 1920s, the exhibition sheds light on a secret chapter in Canadian history. By working with the ‘domestic acts of love’ the artist stitches a meditation on loss. “Foundling” is an acknowledgement and prayer for those young mothers and their babies and their sorrows.

Michèle Karch-Ackerman is a nationally recognized contemporary artist whose installations have been featured in public galleries across Canada. With influences drawn from history, literature and experience, her works have inspired viewers with their challenging subject matter and aesthetics. “Foundling” will continue to tour to the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, The Grimsby Public Gallery, The Art Gallery of Peterborough, and The Tom Thomson Gallery where it will be featured as part of a retrospective of the artist’s work in 2012.

State of Grace Susan - Low-Beer.
In “State of Grace,” Susan Low-Beer’s interpretive clay sculptures of children capture the buoyancy, movement, and lightness of innocent joyful exuberance. An intentional ambiguity about specifics adds mystery, much depth, and meaning.

Susan Low Beer is represented in the collections of the Museum of Civilization, the Modern Museum of Fine Arts, The National Museum of Modern Art in Japan, The Mint Museum of Craft and Design, the Burlington Art Centre, and the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, as well the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery and numerous private collections.

Rhinos - Cristian Raduta.
Romania is in a transitional period after 50 years of communism and its aftermath. Young artists are finding their voices by combining their individual views and experiences with the social, and political environment and transferring these back into their work.

Against this backdrop, Romanian artist Cristian Raduta is fascinated by the ‘confrontation of the bestiary’ (compendium of beasts made popular during the Middle Ages). His rhino sculptures hover over the realms of fables and myths, and oscillate between their world and ours. Still, they remain well-grounded, solid, and hold their space; they seem timeless as they invite us to some unreachable other world. Raduta received his MFA from the National University of Art in Bucharest, and amongst his exhibition credits, he was in the 2008 Carnival Exhibition in the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale.

We wish to thank 418 Contemporary Art Gallery from Bucharest who made the loan of these works possible. The Gallery will also be featuring recent glass donations in the Mutual Tower Gallery starting April 13, 2010

Canstruction

Canstruction® is a foodraising event that brings together teams of engineers, designers, architects, and students that compete to design and build intricate sculptures from thousands of cans of food. These impressive works of art could be as large as 10'x10'x8'. All of the cans/building materials will be donated to The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and used to feed individuals in our community.

Canstruction is just a few weeks away. On March 18th, 14 teams and 30,000 lbs of food will collide. Ten hours later in the early morning of March 19th, fourteen uniquely different can sculptures will stand in “GRAND STYLE”.

Canstruction 2010 has changed location and has joined the Grand Home and Life Show, held at Bingemans.

The structure will be on display in the Heritage Room on:
March 19th - 1:00 - 5:00pm - free admission.
March 20 & 21 - 10:00 - 5:00 - food donations prior to noon each day or $8 per adult, $6 for seniors and students, children 12 and under free. Admission includes the Grand Home and Life Show.

DIG IN Food Drive

Strip the Streets

Students from all over Waterloo Region will come to Waterloo Public Square to spend the night outside in the cold to raise awareness for youth homelessness.

On February 26th around 8:00PM, an estimated 50 students will arrive at the square with tents and the clothes on their back to learn from members of our homeless community and experience for themselves a little piece of what they must endure every day of their lives.

The students will also provide literature and education to interested members of the public and raise cash and goods donations to support local homeless initiatives such as ROOF and SHOW.

Friends and supporters are invited to join the students on Saturday morning from 11am - 12pm for a rally to finish off their journey. Complete with Inspirational Speakers and great music, this rally will get the word out that our community Youth should not have to go homeless. Let's rally together for change!

Imagyn Film Festival

The Imagyn Film Festival offers a supportive, safe and inclusive forum for Canadian youth to share their views and stories through short film. Students are encouraged to express their experiences of violence and of peace through a constructive use of technology and art.

After a highly successful launch in 2009, the Imagyn Film Festival announced this year’s theme as “Anti Violence: Engagement and Resistance.” From March 5-7, the festival will present student-made films and videos, panel discussions featuring regional students, and workshops facilitated by community leaders, all with the goal of providing an inviting opportunity for Canadian students to express their perspectives on various forms of violence and various forms of peace.

Multiple inquiries have revealed how ideas and practices of gender and sexual-orientation are central to any critical discussion of youth violence. For this reason, the IFF Festival highlights the problem of gender-based violence. Despite mounting reports citing the unravelling of youth safety, security and health in Canada, the experiences and voices of young people continue to be ignored, dismissed, or silenced. The community inaction is disheartening, considering that in addition to the increasing incidence that is accounted for, violence is, in fact, underreported: fear, shame and guilt prevent as many as 90% of students from reporting violence.

The Imagyn Film Festival recognizes and responds to this alarming trend by prioritizing student voices and concerns. In addition to breaking silence, the IFF Festival also break new ground make room for community hope, positivity and creativity, through celebrating the knowledge, incredible skills and courage showcased by our Canadian youth.

Admission to all events is free and open to the public. High school students are especially encouraged to attend.

Friday March 5th from 6-9pm the Imagyn Film Festival will be having the Creative Resistance Cafe at the Senate and Board Chambers at the Wilfrid Laurier University campus. Exploring how people in the community resist oppression? What is your role in creating change. Come learn through dynamic dialogue.

Saturday March 6th from 7-11pm at the Princess Twin Cinema we will be having a screening of student film submissions exploring how Canadian youth are resisting violence in their communities. Join us afterwards for a post screening gathering and celebration!

Sunday March 7th from 11am- 3:30 pm in the Bricker Academic building at the WLU campus. The Imagyn Film Festival wraps up the weekend with a day full of interactive workshops including -- "Be the Change" Queer Activism, Fun Activism, Community Engagement and Non-Violence Movement, as well as Alternative Living. CIGI Afghanistan Series Part 1- From the Front Line: Canadian Forces in Afghanistan

Join Colonel J.C.R. Lacroix, CD (Deputy Commander of Canadian and NATO Forces in Kandahar Province from February to November 2009) and Tara Denham (Chief of Staff for the Representative of Canada in Kandahar) for a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the counter-insurgency struggle taking place in this conflict-stricken region.

You will also learn how Canadian Forces are working to assist the Afghans in sustaining a more secure environment in order to facilitate development, reconstruction and law and order. The Colonel will speak on combat operations, the challenges of command during a demanding and complex mission, as well as the advances being made by Canadian soldiers and civilians in spite of the difficult conditions in the heart of Kandahar Province. You will not want to miss this informative discussion about the Afghanistan mission.

Explore the Giant Colon and Get the Inside Truth about Colon Cancer!

What is 40 feet long, eight feet high and pink all over? ColonCancerCheck is bringing the Giant Colon to Waterloo on Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7 to help raise awareness about the importance of screening for colorectal cancer among Ontarians aged 50 and over.

This free multimedia exhibit is a one-of-a-kind adventure to explore all the features of a colon, while learning more about how to keep yours healthy and reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Be sure to stop by Waterloo Town Square on Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sunday from 12pm-5pm to step inside the Giant Colon for free and visit informative displays from our regional cancer care agencies and networks.

Lecture series for seniors

The City of Waterloo’s 55+ programs and services division is launching a new series, called Speaking to Seniors. It will run on the third Monday of each month, featuring different speakers that will discuss topics of interest to people who are 55 years old and above.

The series kicks off on Jan. 18, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre, at 510 Dutton Dr.

This month’s speaker is personal trainer Gloria Vaughan. She will talk about how to optimize your health and happiness in order to live a fulfilling life. Admission is $2 per person.
